HOW TO GET THE PROPER FITTING MASK

It’s very important to have your mask fit snugly on your face to prevent sound from escaping and to keep the mask in its proper position. Each stem has holes so you can determine the appropriate length.

Once you find the proper length, you attach the stems. There is a right stem and a left stem so the adapter contours to “your” face. The big secret is you can gently mold each stem for a better fit using a blow dryer or a heat gun. Introducing a little heat allows the stem to be molded and once it cools back down, it retains that shape forever! It’s kind of like adjusting regular eyeglasses. The stems can be shaped to better fit around your ears making it extremely comfortable and lightweight.

There are also silicone cushions that you can add to the stems for additional comfort. Sometimes adding silicone cushions helps you achieve a better fit as well.

ABOUT ME

I began my court reporting career in 2010. I loved the text to speech aspect of being able to dictate using my own little verbal language with code words and abbreviations and have everything appear on my computer screen in a formatted transcript with my CAT software.

The only bad part about it was my southern accent. Sometimes I had misrecognitions and sometimes my spellings might be completely off. I knew I could use my translates on the fly, but sometimes I just wanted to correct my dictation manually. The more corrections I was able to make during my dictation, the quicker I could complete the transcript and get paid. I kept imagining how I could hold my mask up to my face so I’d have both hands free.

Several years ago, I can vividly remember sitting on my mother’s couch one night telling her of this thing I wanted to invent. Little did I know within 60 days, we’d find out my mom had pancreatic cancer and she would never see my vision come to fruition. For the next 18 months, I’d have to put everything on the back burner to help take care of my parents. My mom passed in April and my Dad passed in December of the same year.

Once I was able to get everything back on track, I began working with an engineer and developed a prototype. I wanted the adapter to be lightweight, comfortable, easy to assemble, somewhat adjustable and mostly, I didn’t want it to mess up my hair! After a few adjustments and some trial and error in the fit, I came up with the Freedom Mask Adapter.

Since there were a couple of different masks out on the market, I designed an adapter for each one. I applied for and was granted a patent and here we are today! I love court reporting! It’s enabled me to work both as a freelance court reporter and an official reporter.

Thanks so much for taking the time to check out the Freedom Mask Adapter!
